Beauty is Pain!

As a girl growing up, I’d often hear my mother telling me “beauty is pain.”  She was also known to quote her mother saying, “If it zippers, it fits…” but that’s a story for another day.  My shoot with Naomi really gives that phrase new meaning!  Naomi is a stunning and truly gifted vocalist and was wanting to add a more grown up and sophisticated look to her portfolio.  The session started easily enough in the studio, but then moved to the waterfront.  This is not a session from months ago!  It was last month!  The waterfront in mid-winter is not the most comfortable place to be even dressed appropriately.  But as you notice Naomi’s wardrobe, there is a lot of bare skin there (my mother would have also mentioned catching pneumonia dressed like that…but I digress).  And she was a total trooper, even when it started raining!  She did not complain once!  Is was so cold out, a passer by stopped everything to bring Naomi a cup of hot tea to warm her up.  I’m pretty sure he was in love!  And let’s please not miss the shoes Naomi is wearing.  They were very interesting on the wooden bridge […]

Smithsoneon & The Jazz Thugs

This week, I was grateful for the opportunity to photograph some very talented  people in a truly unique and challenging space.  In a small, independently owned, Asian American book store,  Smithsoneon & the Jazz Thugs performed by the light of two small, red paper lanterns.  East Meets West Bookstore is managed by the Boston Progress Arts Collective.  It houses the largest selection of independent Asian American products on the East Coast, including books, DVDs, hip hop, rock, and spoken word CDs and vinyl, chapbooks, gear and one-of-a-kind artwork from established and up-and-coming artists from across the country.  They hosted Smithsoneon and the Jazz Thugs as part of their Music Box Series   The lack of any real light and the tight quarters made this a very interesting challenge to shoot.  I’m hoping these images are as unique as the outstanding music I heard that night.  The Jazz Thugs are a group of gentlemen who met their freshmen year at Berklee School of Music and have been playing Jazz together ever since.  They’ve only named themselves recently due to the increased attention they’ve received.  Saturday night, they featured jazz covers as well as some unique compositions including an amazing piece set to Martin Luther […]
